The Horn of Winter is a legendary artifact of the free folk, said to be capable of bringing down the Wall that shields the Seven Kingdoms from the terrors beyond. Its power is invoked in the ancient tale of Joramun, a King-Beyond-the-Wall who, according to song, blew the Horn of Winter and woke giants from the earth. Appearance and the False Horn

The most prominent public appearance of a horn claimed to be the Horn of Joramun occurs during the execution of Mance Rayder. The queen's men produce a horn described as black and banded with old gold, eight feet long from end to end, with runes carved into the golden bands. This horn is presented as the legendary artifact, and Melisandre proclaims it the "Horn of Darkness." She then sets it ablaze, and it burns with green and yellow fire before tumbling into a fire pit. This public destruction is a spectacle designed to crush the hopes of the captive wildlings and demonstrate the power of Stannis Baratheon and the Lord of Light.

Deception and the True Horn

Despite the public burning, the true fate of the Horn of Winter is shrouded in deception. After the event, Tormund Giantsbane reveals to Jon Snow that the horn Melisandre burned was a fake. He claims that Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, had never actually found the true horn, despite extensive searching.
